Stimulations of fractured reservoirs

The overarching goal of this project is to predict the response of a reservoir to changes in reservoir conditions as a consequence of depletion and/or stimulation (hydrofracturing). To better understand these processes, we develop numerical models for the simulation of flow through hydraulic fractures and reservoirs.

Within the 2F2S research project, a numerical tool for the simulation of the hydraulic fracturing process was developed. The current project aims to build on the experience and expertise gained in the 2F2S project by focusing specifically on the role of fluid flow in hydraulic fractures and the surrounding formation.

To study the role of fluid flow in stimulated reservoirs, we developed a fully coupled model. In the model, hydraulic fractures and the surrounding formation are fully coupled by prescribing suitable coupling conditions along and across the fracture surfaces.

Current focus lies on connecting the fully coupled flow model to previously developed fracture propagation models.
